Natural waxes are derived directly from plants and animals and are commonly used across a range of industries, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Examples of widely used natural waxes include beeswax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, rice bran wax, and laurel wax. Among animal-based waxes, beeswax—produced by worker bees to construct honeycomb cells—is the most prevalent and is frequently used in candles and personal care products. Lanolin, extracted from the wool of sheep, is another animal-derived wax with diverse applications, from skincare to industrial coatings. Plant-based options like soy wax, derived from soybean oil, are also widely used in cosmetics and candle-making.
In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) permits only specific natural waxes—such as carnauba, candelilla, and beeswax—for coating fruits and vegetables. These edible waxes help retain moisture, improve shelf life, and enhance appearance. However, ensuring their authenticity and safety is critical. At SIMA LABS, we conduct detailed analysis using advanced instruments like FTIR spectroscopy to detect and distinguish between natural and synthetic wax coatings on produce. Our testing services support regulatory compliance and ensure that only approved, food-safe waxes are used in the supply chain.
